Overlooking Loch Scresort, a sheltered bay halfway up the east
coast where the ferry arrives, sits the reddish form of Kinloch Castle, an extravagant Edwardian dream,
commissioned by wealthy industrialist George Bullough in 1897 and completed in 1900. The stone was shipped over from Annan in Dumfriesshire, and it is said that he paid the workmen extra to wear kilts.
Visitors may stay at the Castle (hostel accommodation in small dormitories) from March to October (all meals are on a self catering basis).
Parties of up to 45 can be accommodated in the hostel at a rate of £12 per day (2002 prices) plus Full Scottish Breakfast (£5.50) or Continental Breakfast (£3.50). Evening meals are available in the Bistro. The bistro is also open to non residents, however to avoid disappointment it is advisable to book. Packed lunches are also available by arrangement.

Kinloch Castle Friends Association, founded in 1996, is a registered Scottish Charity which has over 100 members and produces a newsletter.
It is a membership organisation reliant on annual dues. The aim is to generate awareness, interest and funding to ensure that Kinloch Castle and its contents remain open for all visitors, so that what people enjoy and study today others will be able to appreciate and research tomorrow. The Association runs regular work parties to Kinloch Castle when it undertakes agreed renovation activities with Scottish Natural Heritage.
Kinloch means 'at the head of the loch'. The Bullough family mausoleum can also be visited if you want to walk over to it on the other side of the island.
