lOOPHOLES OR MEUTRIERES

The defense of the castles was from the walls, gateways and towers. The introduction of loopholes was at the end of the 12^th. Century. They enabled the defenders to shoot at the enemy outside the castle while they remained unseen and safe from attack from behind the walls.
