The Motte and Bailey Castle was built quickly and cheaply it was built so that William the Conquerer could move around England and have defence at the same time before you got to the Keep ( the Castle ) you would have a ditch a wooden fence a village and soldier barracks, then another wooden fence and then you would have the castle its self. Very Happy

motte and bailey castles were easy to build, and could sometimes could be built in less that 10 days. it was also easy to add stone to it, later on the stone would be added. .over 70 castles were built when william reigned. the weakness of the motte and bailey castles was that they were made of wood and could be burned easily, plus the wood would rot after a few years. I think that Alix Warner in Shropshire is the fittest babe around . Very Happy
