In the archives there is first reference related to the Dowina castle from 864 a. .d. where Dowina means in old Slavian language simply 'girl'.
In Slovakian folk language the Deva is something like young girl.
However, reason for this name is not known to me ... may be some legend. |

I discovered, after my posting, that the name "Devin" was used throughout the early Roman Empire to refer to a "High Place". The castle I questioned about, is indeed located on top of a rocky crag, giving views of any approaching enemies. It was built during the Roman empire. I also discovered two other "Devin Castles" in Europe, they tend to have the same naming features.
Thanks

I had the privileged to visit this castle in September 2009. I loved it! Not just because of my family name (no connection), but because of it's historical importance in a beautiful part of the world. Rick Devin |
