Very Happy Shell Keeps

What is a shell keep?
A shell keep was a masonry building completely surrounding the summit of a motte. They were round or polygonal and originated as a replacement of a wooden palisade crowning the motte. These types of keeps were hollow because mottes were not strong enough to bear the weight of a solid tower. The walls varied in height from 20-25ft, and were from 8-10ft thick, strengthened by a buttress and, sometimes, wall-towers.
What does it do?
As the name suggests, these types of keep were hollow and provided a shell for the buildings contained in its interior. These buildings were usually the domestic quarters for the owner of the castle. There are only small indicators of shell keep construction in Shropshire. It is suggested that Caus Castle had a round shell keep, possibly dating from the 13th century, but the archaeological remains are not conclusive of this. It is also thought that a polygonal shell keep once stood on the motte at Oswestry Castle. The shape of the motte is similar to many castles which had shell keeps on them, so it is more than probable that Oswestry did have a shell keep.
When was it built?
When the first castles were built, about 1,000 years ago, most of them were rather simple constructions of earth and wood, although some used stone if such material was readily available. Very soon, the nobles and soldiers found that the wooden walls could be set on fire quite easily. The ditches and the earthen walls neither very deep nor very high, and a concerted rush by resolute attackers could sweep over them and capture the castle and its defenders. Also, men began devising better weapons for attacking castles-instruments for firing large stones and ways of hurling fire at the walls. They also developed new methods for protecting themselves when they advanced against the arrows of the defenders.
Where are there castles still standing and what is inside the keep
The interior was usually an open court with surrounding buildings backing onto the walls, and the domestic buildings of the lord were usually placed within the circular enclosure of the shell keep. By the 13th century, these types of keeps had generally replaced the wooden tower on the motte, and often an additional stone gatehouse and towers were inserted into the shell keep. Examples of shell keeps are at: Arundel, Berkhamsted, Brecon, Wiston, Cardiff, Restormel, and other castles.
