The Gunpowder Tower

Photo The Gunpowder Tower was built between 1554-1556. It was used, as the name suggests, for storing gunpowder and ammunition, and grain in peacetime. The lower part of the tower's walls is now covered by a layer of soil for during the last four centuries the ground level has risen from 1.5 to 2 metres. The tower has a rounded facade overlooking the settlement that used to nestle by the town's walls. Its small narrow loophole windows emphasize the indestructible mighty walls which are 3-metres thick at the base. Made of natural rough stone, the Gunpowder Tower is impressive not so much in size as in its solid, whole construction. It may serve as an example of military defence architecture of the Lviv Renaissance.
