Review this castle

A 19th. century romantic palace with a revivalist architecture that keeps from the former building a magnificent 16th century altarpiece by Nicolau de Chanterenne. Inside, the rich halls of decorative arts of the most diversified styles match beautifully with the paintings, the tiles and the stucco works of the walls and ceilings.

On the highest peaks of the Serra de Sintra stands the spectacular palace of Pena, an electric medley of architectural styles built in the 19th. century for the husband of the young queen Maria II

It stands over the ruins of a Hieronymite monastery founded here in the 15th century on the site of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Pena

With the declaration of the Republic in 1910, the palace became a museum, preserved as it was when the royal family lived here.

Raquel, from New York, wrote:
I love the diverse architectural designs and flavors which are encompassed by this one building.  The furnishings and entire interior design are so period and breathtaking.  It takes forever to thoroughly walk through and enjoy every moment.  The day I visited this castle, my enthusiasm for it lasted the whole day.  This is certainly NOT the same old thing.
