Review
this castle

Marvao Castle was built by King Dinis in about 1299, the castle dominates the
village. Its walls enclose two cisterns and a keep and offer spectacular views
south and west towards the Serra de Sao Mamede and eastward to the Spanish
frontier.

| Though austere, the castle at Marvao is
awesome in its setting. Marvao itself is one of the few towns in
Europe still retained within its medieval walls, thus giving the visitor
the feeling of stepping back into the middle ages. In spite of its
remoteness and isolation, the most surprising thing about a visit to the
castle at Marvao is that it is deafening. The constant winds at that
height are so loud that it is almost impossible to carry on a conversation
with a person standing right beside you. This adds to the feeling of
having lost modern times. Walking the ramparts it is easy to imaging
that you are still watching for invaders from Spain. Portugal has an
excellent posada in the town if you want to stay for a night or two.
Or the town is easily reached (about a 10 minute drive) from Castelo de
Vide nearby, where there are several very good hotels. Castelo de
Vide, by the way, is also an old walled, fortified, town, with a very
interesting castle of its own. These towns are well worth a few
days' visit. |
