The principal tower is practically all that remains of this fortress, which, although it does contain some older masonry, was almost completely reconstructed in the fifteenth century. The pentagonal tower is itself defended by round and angular towers and topped with powerful machicolations. The fortress was entered through a series of nearly impenetrable doors and stairways. A few towers surrounding it have rectangular embrasures, built for artillery during the sixteenth century.

Iscar was repopulated at the end of the eleventh century by Alfar Fanez, companion of El Cid, and the castle must have been built to protect the village and the surrounding land. In 1334 it was the scene of a confrontation between King Alfonso XI and his local governor, who refused to let the king enter the castle.
