Two castles for the price of one! (1) The best
preserved Roman castle in Britain (one of the "Forts of the Saxon
Shore" built c300AD for defense against marauders). Complete
quadrilateral of walls still stands c25 feet high and at least c400 by 300
feet, with sea reaching two sides at high tide. (2) A Norman castle c80
feet high in one corner - you can climb up to roof. As a bonus there is
also a Norman church within the Roman walls - and a small cricket pitch! I
first went there in 1956 and have been going back regularly ever since,
even though it's over 200 miles from my home. Don't miss it! |
