Castle Howard is neither owned or run by the National Trust - it remains one of the many great privately owned historic houses. It is currently managed and lived in by the Hon Simon Howard, son of the late Lord Howard. The continued private ownership of such places keeps them alive and full of vitality. You will not find here the dead hand of institutionalized museum type ossification. Further information on historic houses ,castles and gardens in Britain can be found in the definitive guide Hudsons Historic Houses and Gardens.

I have the dubious honor of being directly related to Sir Charles Howard, who built Castle Howard in 1699. I have wanted to visit the Castle for over 30 years when my Father made the Howard Family link back to 1071 A.D. The Castle is magnificent, having been restored back to it's 17th - 18th Century splendor. It is by far the best Castle to visit in England. A 2 hour train ride from London to York. Spend at least one day in York and visit the Minster, the largest Church in England, Walk the Norman fortress walls that surround York. Enjoy excellent restaurants and sites. We stayed at a wonderful Bed & Breakfast called 23 St Marys Place. You don't have to be a Howard to enjoy this wonderful site. The Rose gardens are in full bloom. Take the challenge. Go For It! Its an experience you won't soon forget. John (12th Generation) Howard

Castle Howard is a huge estate now taken over by the National Trust in England. The PBS series “Brideshead Revisited” was filmed there. It is quite fantastic to walk through, the grounds are spectacular. A wonderful day's adventure! There is a gift shop and cafe right in the basement of the castle as well!!
