I'm new and this is my first post, so, howdie Wink

Anyways, I tried googling information on a palace but that searched turned out to be downright fruitless.

I'm writing a novel and in one of my countries, the entire borders are heavily protected by natural forces - ie, towering moutains and cursed rivers to name a few. I recently found out that castles were only built for protection, and weren't built while the borders were defended.

The only other option that I can think of, is to have a palace - one big lavish powerhouse in my country.

So my question is, what would go on in that palace? Would there be the same people living there as in a castle, or just a group of slaves tending to an Emperor as a majestic house?
