because when the village was being attacked, their only chance of survival was to go inside the castle. if they lived very far from the castle, they had a better chance of being killed by the enemy, DOOFUS |

Actually, not quite. Villagers usually weren't allowed into the castles in times of war. However, the garrisons stationed there were usually a policing force for the area, so day-to-day, it was well-protected, and their pay stimulated the local economy. Most castle towns were also market towns, for just those reasons--would you take your produce to a town that had no police and little currency in circulation?

Jane, I totally agree with you. Actually, just dont call people doofuses at all.
The normal reason was because the serfs were bound to his lord. The lord
lived near a castle so that in times of war, HE could be safe. The
serfs(peasants) had to live close to lord because they worked for him. |
