On the ridge overlooking the town of Castrogeriz, there remain the ruins of an important but almost destroyed castle that may have Visigothic origins.
The fortification was long and narrow, following the topography of the site. The walls were stout, and a few thick towers, with loopholes for archers, still remain.

The fortress was besieged by the Moslems on a number of occasions during the eleventh century. After six months of fighting, Alfonso VII recovered it from the Aragonese. John II made the town and the castle a county seat and the Supreme Council of Castile resided there during the revolt of the Communeros.
