different castles were made out of different materials. to begin with castles were made out of wood and earth, called motte and bailey castles. These were quick, cheap and eassy to make.

As time went on rulers decided that strength was better than speed and started making castles out of stone. These castles withstood stronger attacks and protect there inhabitants better.
